What More Can You Throw At Me?

Racial Tolerance and Funny words

All the hype about PM Lee's National Day Rally on racial and religion tolerance can be epitomised in this funny incident, when kids say the darndest things. After my run on Saturday, I was doing my cooling down in the playground. There were 5 children playing a game of soccer and they were decidng on how to split the team. There were 3 indians and 2 Chinese boys. The conversation that followed nearly caused me to cramp my hamstring when stretching:

All children: O Bei Som!

After several rounds...

Chinese Boy: Aiyah this is taking too long... let's just play

Indian Boy: But the team how we split

Chinese Boy: No problem. WHITE VS BLACK.

Yeah there you have it. Racial tolerance.

In another incident of funny words, we were having a discussion at work today:

Mr. X: Wah Mr. B really pulled a long face today... I thought Alvin's face was long enough already, but his face was longer than Alvin's!

(I was stunned. Stupid Chin Cher was laughing in the background... nabei)

Mr. Y: Hahaha... that's no good.. Alvin you better do something about it.

(In my mind: What the fuck? How am I supposed to do something about what I was born with???)

Me, spoken words: Huh??? How am I supposed to 'do something about my face' which I was born with...

Mr. Y: Errr... Just smile more.

Me: (Total loss for words)

For the record, I'm one of the 'smiliest' person you will ever meet in your life.
When I smile, you can't see my eyes...

Finally... After 4 years...

I passed my IPPT! Results as follow:

Sit up - 41 (5 pts)

Standing Broad Jump - 225cm (3 pts)

Chin Up - 7 (2 pts)

Shuttle Run - 10.1 sec (3)

2.4km Run - 12 min 07 sec (2 pts)

Result: PASS
Award: INCENTIVE

And what better way to celebrate than having a McChicken Burger and Seaweed shaker fries (I definitely prefer Subway but it's too far from home given my shagness...)

Of course this may seem like a joke to many but it is one individual goal which I have finally achieved. The last time I passed my IPPT was in 2005, while i was still undergoing training in SISPEC. After posting to be a Transport Supervisor, it's slackomania all the way! I have always done poorly in running - failing all my 2.4km runs in Secondary school. This is definitely an achievement for me (why would I be blogging if otherwise).

Thanks to fitness master Isaac... for your motivation and tips and tricks on fitness and running. Previous times when I took my IPPT it's 'shagadelic baby!' for every station but these 3 months of training made the static stations a breeze.

I guess the good luck message from Mel came pretty much handy also.. I needed all the luck I could get.

Also thanks to Mr. Muhd Amin, the ironman who could run 100km - no sweat. You may not be reading this but your words etched deeply in my mind  - "when you want to run, don't think so much. Just do it" - plagiarism at its best... He didn't even quote the source from Nike.

I will endeavour to keep up my fitness regime and train for longer distances and better timing. Hopefully the passing of the IPPT is not the end of the fitness regime but a start towards a healthier body... Gawd I sound so... unlike me.

Great Words of Wisdom

One of the wisest words I have heard on MSN which spells out my opinion on life, its facets and presumably 'self-righteous' people:

Mel says (22:01):

im not religious but dusnt mean i dun have basic courtesy wat

u mean i cant treat ur mom well meh

i cant cook lar but like wth

Kopi Ki@ says (22:02):

Alvin Likes this *thumbs up*

No it's not my mum Mel is talking about.
Thumbs up! I heart friends like these...

Warm Morning

Nothing to do with the weather though.

A little message from a friend early in the morning warms the heart. No agenda, no motives, no nothing, Just a simple good morning to dispel the Monday Blues :)

Happy Valentine's Day!

Sorry blog, I have been neglecting you for the longest time. Been pretty busy and just quite lazy to update.

Well my job in the union is treating me pretty well with great colleagues and bosses, and a whole lot to learn. Been to a few countries which I have never been to (I am a super inexperienced traveller). Was in Japan last year October (My Dream PLace!), Hong Kong in November and flying off to Taipei tomorrow morning. Really glad for the opportunities although all these meetings and trips come with huge loads of stress. Shall make the best of it.

I will try to update more when I am back. But I guess nobody wants to read mundane stuff so I shall post only if there are interesting things. Take care everyone and oh, this comes rather late buy Happy New Year!

Just Say No

One of the bosses of my company came to me today and hinted subtly if I could take on some work left by my manager since he is outstation. I said "No, I really have a lot on my hands right now."

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I hate him/her or what.. He/She's really quite a nice person and the usual me will just be like "errrr... ok no problem, when do you need it?". But I am really preparing a lot of stuff for an upcoming business trip. The point I am trying to put across is, how many times will you say no, be it out of fear for being perceived as unhelpful, not sociable, always trying to slack etc.

People tend to fear that they are never good enough, which is one of the '7 bad habits that hold good people back' (I read this from the same titled book). They want to impress and do all they can. They want to be viewed as an efficient multi-tasker who can be relied upon and want everybody to like them. The fact is, no one really bothers about such things. They are just relieved when someone takes charge of some work. I'm not encouraging anyone to push away work here but if you are handling more than you can, your effectiveness and efficiency at other more important work suffers... Does this really mean you are an efficient multi-tasker who can be relied on to submit high quality projects?

You will most probably invite a lot of exploiters who know you are too weak to refuse a job. Take on only what you can manage at that time and what you think will greatly contribute to your key performance indicators. Of course lending a helping hand to others at times when you are available is an excellent way to understand how everything works around as well. The main thing here is balance.

I am still learning the way out here but saying "no" feels good at times. Saying it once does not warrant me to be a guru and start some self help topic here but I have been learning and gaining more experience when it comes to work relations day after day.

FACT: You cannot please everybody, but at least, don't piss yourself off trying to please others.
