February 17 My Boss, My HeroAnother Japanese Dorama that i watched these past 2 days, My Boss, My Hero ends the streak of sad shows that I have watched the past month. This series has got no one dying in the end! In fact, it is so hilarious that I cannot stop laughing every episode. Sakaki "Tornado" Makio (portrayed by Nagase Tomoya) is the young master of the notorious Kantou Sharp Fang Yakuza (gangster) family. However, he is so stupid that he cannot even do simple addition and subtraction, therefore screwing up a deal with the Hong Kong underworld. Enraged, his father decides to send him to school and if he does not graduate after 1 semester, the gang will instead be taken over by his younger brother Sakaki Mikio. Left without a choice, he enrols into Agnes High School Academy. He has to act like a 17 year old, which is 10 years old younger than his actual age and cannot blow his cover as a Yakuza boss. If not, he will be expelled immediately. Luckily for him, his father is a good friend of the school's principal and no one knows his identity except for the principal. School is "a pain in the ass" as described by him in the beginning, but he slowly learns that high school is a fun place and through high school education, he learns love, friendship and romance and this makes him a stronger person. His teacher, sensei Minaki Yuriko (portrayed by Kashii Yu) never once gives up on him and he also has a friend in the school by the name of Sakurakouji Jun (portrayed by Tegoshi Yuya) who thinks that he finally found someone who shares the same views as he did on school and sticks with Makio wherever he goes. Makio also falls in love with one of his classmates Umemura Hikari (portrayed by Aragaki Yui) who is 10 years younger than he is. Thi story actually brings back memories of school, be it in secondary school or polytechnic. Being a Class Leader, Makio does his best and enjoys every moment of being a youth. Which is what school is all about, being together and facing the uncertainties that will come in the future. His classmates are a bunch of cute people too who at first are scattered but under his "leadership" unite together in a funny and uncanny way. One funny scene was when he was dating Umemura-san and running out of places to go, he actually contemplates bringing her drinking or to a casino (cause he doesn't know what high school students do). Nagase Tomoya is a wonderful actor who has loads of funny expressions which made the show so hilarious. For those who are still in school now, treasure the memories that you have with your friends cos you should enjoy every moment of your youth. Once gone, they can never come back. As his sensei puts it "school may be painful and troublesome, and you may have many sad and stressful moments, but come to school everyday. Come to school to study, to have lunch, to talk to your friends. All of you cannot see your future now, that is why you are still together as a class, to face the uncertainties of life together. Enjoy youth". Well isn't this true? I miss school a lot, all my friends and all the teachers (well not all lar.. some are born obnoxious, unreasonable, prejudiced F**kers). I miss travelling to school, talking cock with my friends, disturbing teachers when they are teaching, skipping lessons, NOT skipping lessons, doing projects, teasing each other, doing things together as a class. Isn't this what school is supposed to be? Anyway, I give this dorama 4 out of 5 stars. A must watch for all.. Very, very funny. Below is a picture of how Makio uses this expression whenever a sensei asks the class a question and he does not know how to answer. Not wanting to embarass himself, Makio always tries to stare down the teacher like an animal: February 09 Taiyou no Uta Part 2Just finished watching Taiyou no Uta (A Song to the Sun) drama series yesterday. Starring Erika Sawajiri, she plays Amane Kaoru who has XP (refer to my previous blog entry). Fujishiro Kuoji is played by Yamada Takayuki.
This drama version. although having the same storyline, has a vastly different plot. Kaoru Amane aspires to be a musician although she has XP. She sends many of her audition tapes to a famous producer by the name of Kudou Youhei but was instead rejected many times. Feeling dejected, she sings on the streets at night which she had been doing when she first laid her hands on the guitar. So how did Kouji come into the picture? When Amane was hospitalised due to an injury a few years ago, she chanced upon Kouji abandoning the guitar in a rubbish dump opposite the hospital, thus she picked it up and after 3 years, manage to meet him again which she says is a "miracle". In this drama series, Kouji is not portrayed as a surfer but as a teenager who does cheap part time everywhere. His love for music has died when his beloved orphanage friend Tachibana Asami gave up on him when he went to the Juvenile Detention Centre (he went in in order to protect her reputation). Asami went on to become a megastar. This drama series also shows more characters such as Kouji's friends who even go all the way out to help Kaoru. In one scene, Kouji made a pink "UV suit" for her (same kind as in the movie) so that she could go out in the sun. She rejected the gift as she thought he made it out of pity. His friends then made 4 other suits in green, red, blue and yellow. In order to encourage her to step out of her house, they persuaded her by saying they will accompany her together and they will be the power rangers. hilarious and sweet. This series is pretty much different from the movie as character development is more (since there are 10 episodes to do that) and the story is not as simple as that in the movie. Lots of misunderstandings between Kaoru and Kouji and third parties like Asami adds on to this. But the love between Kaoru and Kouji is deeply developed and in the end, she dies in his arms... In all, this is a sad but very beautiful drama with lovely songs from Erika Sawajiri. I noe this review is quite badly written but I dun think i wanna tell the whole story here. Watch it if you want. 3 and a half out of 5 stars. February 04 Taiyou no Uta aka Midnight Sun aka A Song in the SunJust finished watching this movie Taiyou no Uta or A Song to the Sun. The movie is marketed as Midnight Sun. Yui plays a 16 year old girl by the name of Amane Kaoru, who suffers from xerederma pigmentosum. Amane cannot be exposed to the sun's ultraviolet rays as this condition will worsen and the nervous system of the body will eventually start to break down. She can only go out to perform on the street at night. In the day, she will steal glances at Kouji Fujishiro (portrayed by Tsukamoto Takashi), whose main hobby is surfing, totally differnt from Amane where she cannot see the sun at all. By destiny, Fujishiro chanced upon Amane's performance at night and this starts of a romance between the both of them. Upon learning Amane's illness, Kouji did not leave her but even encouraged her to produce her debut CD. Even when she starts to lose her ability to play the guitar, he still stands by her side and Amane managed to record her debut CD with a band, which became a hit in Japan when she passed away (ok i noe this is a spoiler). Anyway, this movie is rather touching and quite nice. After watching One Litre of Tears, this movie did not bring any tears to my eyes. However, it is still a nice movie to watch cos the songs by Yui are nice! No wonder Nicholas is so in love with her after watching that movie. This movie is also made into a 10 episode drama starring ERIKA SAWAJIRI... yes it's the same gal who acted as Aya Ikeuchi in One Litre of Tears. She always get the role as someone who kena some incurable disease... maybe because of her role in One Litre of Tears. Although I heard the drama version is not as good as the movie, I am still going to watch it. Anyway, I rate this movie 3 and a half out of 5 stars. I will start to blog about the movies, drama serials and anime i stream online and do watch out if you got nothing to do and looking for good shows to watch! February 01 One Litre of Tears
This disease takes away her abilities to control her muscles and reflexes up to a point where she could no longer walk, talk or even swallow her food. However, patients who has this disease still have full intellectual ability, therefore they are being caged in a failing body. The real Aya Kitou writes in her diary about her illness and everyday life, and continued doing so until she could not hold a pen anymore. This show made me cry. Really made me cry when I saw how her family bonds together and how she faces death even when she felt there was "nothing left" for her. I was touched by how her family's always there for her and not being ashamed of her illness. I introduced this drama series to Isaac and he wept too... hahah! His review is more comprehensive and meaningful so I shouldn't write more here. Read his at www.isaacloo.spaces.live.com. I give this drama 6 stars out of 5. Yeah you did not see wrongly. 6 out of 5. It's that good and do watch it if you have the time. If yo do not weep, either you are terribly strong on the inside (and have experienced worse situations) or you are simply made of stone, or you simply cannot be bothered with sappy sobby stories. Currently having my maintainance course right now. Well I really think it's a waste of time and I would actually have my DY Mgr pull me out if not for the fact that I would be meeting my fellow transport supervisor coursemates! Well it was really fun and I treat this course as a gathering. Everyone has at least got 3 stripes now and we are gonna have dinner at The Prata Place in Upp Thomson tmr. Really miss them so much and really had a good time during the course. Thank god this course is short. Although I may not see them as a whole group again, I'm so glad that this time wasting course is only 3 days. Signing off and once again, do catch One Litre of Tears if you can. You will thank me for it.. haha... (sometimes we just need to cry out with shows like that... cos it relieves a lot of your tears that you want to but often cannot cos u have to "be strong" haha.... wat crap) |
