    Racial Tolerance and Funny words

All the hype about PM Lee's National Day Rally on racial and religion tolerance can be epitomised in this funny incident, when kids say the darndest things. After my run on Saturday, I was doing my cooling down in the playground. There were 5 children playing a game of soccer and they were decidng on how to split the team. There were 3 indians and 2 Chinese boys. The conversation that followed nearly caused me to cramp my hamstring when stretching:

    All children: O Bei Som!

    After several rounds...

Chinese Boy: Aiyah this is taking too long... let's just play

Indian Boy: But the team how we split

Chinese Boy: No problem. WHITE VS BLACK.

Yeah there you have it. Racial tolerance.

In another incident of funny words, we were having a discussion at work today:

Mr. X: Wah Mr. B really pulled a long face today... I thought Alvin's face was long enough already, but his face was longer than Alvin's!

(I was stunned. Stupid Chin Cher was laughing in the background... nabei)

Mr. Y: Hahaha... that's no good.. Alvin you better do something about it.

(In my mind: What the fuck? How am I supposed to do something about what I was born with???)

Me, spoken words: Huh??? How am I supposed to 'do something about my face' which I was born with...

Mr. Y: Errr... Just smile more.

    Me: (Total loss for words)

For the record, I'm one of the 'smiliest' person you will ever meet in your life.
When I smile, you can't see my eyes...

    Finally... After 4 years...

I passed my IPPT! Results as follow:

    Sit up - 41 (5 pts)

    Standing Broad Jump - 225cm (3 pts)

    Chin Up - 7 (2 pts)

    Shuttle Run - 10.1 sec (3)

    2.4km Run - 12 min 07 sec (2 pts)

    Result: PASS
    Award: INCENTIVE

And what better way to celebrate than having a McChicken Burger and Seaweed shaker fries (I definitely prefer Subway but it's too far from home given my shagness...)

Of course this may seem like a joke to many but it is one individual goal which I have finally achieved. The last time I passed my IPPT was in 2005, while i was still undergoing training in SISPEC. After posting to be a Transport Supervisor, it's slackomania all the way! I have always done poorly in running - failing all my 2.4km runs in Secondary school. This is definitely an achievement for me (why would I be blogging if otherwise).

Thanks to fitness master Isaac... for your motivation and tips and tricks on fitness and running. Previous times when I took my IPPT it's 'shagadelic baby!' for every station but these 3 months of training made the static stations a breeze.

I guess the good luck message from Mel came pretty much handy also.. I needed all the luck I could get.

Also thanks to Mr. Muhd Amin, the ironman who could run 100km - no sweat. You may not be reading this but your words etched deeply in my mind  - "when you want to run, don't think so much. Just do it" - plagiarism at its best... He didn't even quote the source from Nike.

I will endeavour to keep up my fitness regime and train for longer distances and better timing. Hopefully the passing of the IPPT is not the end of the fitness regime but a start towards a healthier body... Gawd I sound so... unlike me.

    Great Words of Wisdom

One of the wisest words I have heard on MSN which spells out my opinion on life, its facets and presumably 'self-righteous' people:

    Mel says (22:01):

im not religious but dusnt mean i dun have basic courtesy wat

u mean i cant treat ur mom well meh

i cant cook lar but like wth

    Kopi Ki@ says (22:02):

    Alvin Likes this *thumbs up*

No it's not my mum Mel is talking about.
Thumbs up! I heart friends like these...

Nothing to do with the weather though.

A little message from a friend early in the morning warms the heart. No agenda, no motives, no nothing, Just a simple good morning to dispel the Monday Blues :)

    Happy Valentine's Day!

Sorry blog, I have been neglecting you for the longest time. Been pretty busy and just quite lazy to update.

Well my job in the union is treating me pretty well with great colleagues and bosses, and a whole lot to learn. Been to a few countries which I have never been to (I am a super inexperienced traveller). Was in Japan last year October (My Dream PLace!), Hong Kong in November and flying off to Taipei tomorrow morning. Really glad for the opportunities although all these meetings and trips come with huge loads of stress. Shall make the best of it.

I will try to update more when I am back. But I guess nobody wants to read mundane stuff so I shall post only if there are interesting things. Take care everyone and oh, this comes rather late buy Happy New Year!

    Just Say No

One of the bosses of my company came to me today and hinted subtly if I could take on some work left by my manager since he is outstation. I said "No, I really have a lot on my hands right now."

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I hate him/her or what.. He/She's really quite a nice person and the usual me will just be like "errrr... ok no problem, when do you need it?". But I am really preparing a lot of stuff for an upcoming business trip. The point I am trying to put across is, how many times will you say no, be it out of fear for being perceived as unhelpful, not sociable, always trying to slack etc.

People tend to fear that they are never good enough, which is one of the '7 bad habits that hold good people back' (I read this from the same titled book). They want to impress and do all they can. They want to be viewed as an efficient multi-tasker who can be relied upon and want everybody to like them. The fact is, no one really bothers about such things. They are just relieved when someone takes charge of some work. I'm not encouraging anyone to push away work here but if you are handling more than you can, your effectiveness and efficiency at other more important work suffers... Does this really mean you are an efficient multi-tasker who can be relied on to submit high quality projects?

You will most probably invite a lot of exploiters who know you are too weak to refuse a job. Take on only what you can manage at that time and what you think will greatly contribute to your key performance indicators. Of course lending a helping hand to others at times when you are available is an excellent way to understand how everything works around as well. The main thing here is balance.

I am still learning the way out here but saying "no" feels good at times. Saying it once does not warrant me to be a guru and start some self help topic here but I have been learning and gaining more experience when it comes to work relations day after day.

FACT: You cannot please everybody, but at least, don't piss yourself off trying to please others.

    Shine for Singaporeans. Again!

Hi all my faithful readers! I'm back with a once in a while update. I guess my blog is pretty much like the TV series "Days of our Lives". You can miss 200 episodes and still follow the plot. Nothing really interesting to blog about here but this is another issue on... You got it, Singaporeans!

Recently there have been some issues with foreign workers in Singapore, especially the Serangoon Gardens area. The Singapore Government plans to change Serangoon Garden Technical School to a Foreign Workers Dormitory.

Serangoon Gardens has always been well known for Chomp Chomp food centre, its bungalows and a quiet, serene environment. With a huge influx of foreign workers, there are concerns over social security, the dwindling of property prices and the nuisance that foreign workers may create. I fully understand the points above and there is no doubt all these may be points of concerns for residents residing in the area. I stay in Jurong East and every night there are many workers loitering around JE MRT station and Boon Lay MRT station. As it would be people will not feel safe for their girlfriends, daughters and wives passing through these places but:

Leave these workers on an offshore island???!!!

It's like putting them on Guantanamo Bay man! These workers have rights too and to travel all the way here and do all these shit work for Singaporeans, at least such educated people can suggest some better ideas? I am not trying to be high and mighty here but somehow, I've had it enough with Singaporeans thinking they are world class and own the world. Our forefathers are immigrants as well and as you would have it, the property that you buy is also built by these foreign workers. One of my first few jobs after graduation from Sec school was to work in a construction site and I can assure you, no Singaporeans with a degree and right frame of mind will take on the job.

One thing for certain we still do not know what may happen, and I may be wrong with all of the above. But at the very least, show some human respect for them. We are all part of the world ya?

"We are the world.. We are the Children..."

    Shine for Singapore...

    August 07

    Shine for...... "Singaporean"

National Day is just 2 days away. What does it mean for you to be a Singaporean? Some lady showed me what it really meant in the MRT today.

Ended work kind of late today due to some function, therefore the train was not as packed. A lady was standing in front of me, who appears to be in her early 40s. Seated in front of her were 3 university students. The whole drama started when one of them took out her water bottle and started to uncap it. Conversation as follows:

Lady X: You shouldn't drink in the MRT you know

    Girls: ???

Lady X: What if you spill the water on the train and people slip?

Girl 1: Don't worry I will be very careful.

Lady X: What if it happens? I mean there's a sign right there (pointing to the sign) that states no food and drinks allowed. If you spill then who is going to clean it up?

Girl 2: Errr... well if it really spills we will clean it up with tissue paper.

Lady X: The point is not wiping it up. Can't you read the sign? It says "No Food and Drinks Allowed"

Girl 3: Well everybody does that and I don't see anybody falling down because of water.

Lady X: (Exasperated, going schizo) Thats not the point! You can read the sign, WHY DON'T YOU JUST FOLLOW? YOU GIRLS ARE SINGAPOREANS RIGHT? CAN'T YOU EVEN FOLLOW SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS? You should be more considerate!

Alvin: *Sniggers at the back*, noticing that Lady X was lying on the pole like a pole dancer, leaving no space for others to hold on to.

Girls: (Exasperated, definitely NOT GOING SCHIZO over water on the train) But...

Lady X: (Interrupts Girls) Don't argue so much lar! Just follow the rules. Is it that difficult?

Ang Mor lady over the MRT intercom: Tanjong Pager (after 5 secs and train comes almost to a stop..) Tanjong Pagar

Girls 1 & 2: *bids farewell to Girl 3, mumbling as they stepped out of the train*

Lady X: *Staring at Girls 1 & 2, clearly with murderous intent*

    Girls 1 & 2: *continues to mumble*

Ang Mor lady over the MRT intercom: Doors Closing... too too too too too too too too

Lady X: *Walks quickly towards the door and steps out, hands flailing at the girls* Hey you girls!

    MRT Door: PSSSSSSSST... TROB

Ang Mor lady over the MRT intercom: Next station, Tiong Bahru

    - The End -

Wow, If I wasn't really tired from the train ride I would seriously have loved to follow her out and see what happens next. Seriously uber funny, especially the part in bold above. The Auntie is a REAL SINGAPOREAN. She JUST FOLLOW LAW.

Happy birthday Singapore, Shine for Singaporeans.

    KL Trip

Was over at KL last weekend and it was quite fun. Didn't do any shopping (except for buying one Jeffrey Deaver's book over there titled "The Broken Window"). Some pictures:

    CIMG0145

Remember I went for fish spa in Singapore a couple of months back? This time I went for it in Malaysia, and you can obviously see how freaking big the fish is! I was freaked out at first, cos it is really much much bigger thatn the ones you find in Singapore, but tried it nevertheless and actually, quite shiok man. Haha...

    DSC00461

How cool is this? I managed to get a monkey up my shoulder and took a picture with it. It's called the silver leaf monkey due to the hairstyle of the monkey. Well they are really quite gentle, only get excited at the sight of food. Stupid colleagues went to tag this picture on facebook, and tagging my name on the monkey. But well, we have the same hairstyle lar...

Went for a really nice seafood dinner at the rustic fishing village, after that went for a firefly trip. This firefly park is at Kuala Selangor, consisting of a boat ride across a swamp and boy, those fireflies look beautiful. Millions of them at the trees flashing lights simultaneously like a christmas tree. Its touted as the 8th wonder of the world. Did nto take any pictures as it was really very dim and it will be impossible to capture them on camera unless you have lenses and shutter speeds created for F1 Race. (this is true ok, I asked Wilfred who was on the same boat, and he was a photo-journalist).

Nice experience we had anyway. Well just a brief update for all of you to know that I am still alive.

Anyway I had a chat with one of my friends some time back and she said something which I find really bewildering. She was talking about her boyfriend and said that if want to find a guy, must find one that has religion, because guys with religion will be guided by the rules of the religion and be more morally upright. Friends who know me, relax ok, I did not kill her on the spot. Muahaha. Anyway, i think that its a complete load of BULLSHIT. Okay I actually started typing a lot of things but I am scared I will get arrested. So i shall just stop here. Oh and in case any of you here read this and thinks that I really need to accept God into my life, well, don't bother and don't even try to tell me. I respect your religion and hope that you will respect my "no-religion" state. So don't blame me for snapping into your face next time any of you preach me with any such bullshit, cos I wun hold back, as many of you have experienced before. :)

    New Job, New Experiences

I mentioned in my previous entry that I will be going on to the union side as Industrial Relations Officer come June. Well I have been doing some work in the union including negotiations and bringing overseas guests around to sightsee. This aspect of my job really requires some knowledge about the good places to eat, shop and see in Singapore and I am slowly building my database of these places. I had exceptional experience of eating scorpions and black ants for lunch, and first time doing fish spa reflexology. Well I know many of you may have done that but this is really a first time for me.

    IMAG0008 IMAG0015

First the food. The scorpions were quite bearable but the big black ants were the irritating bit (looks like blueberries from the picture). With their 6 legs and 2 feelers, and so many of them on one toufu, the swallowing is unbearable. You feel them just crawling down your throat. The best (or worst) thing is, it has the taste of ants, if you know what I mean. Imagine after squashing some ants and then smelling your hands, now imagine having that taste in your mouth. Uber.... Shiok!

The fish spa was a good experience. These small fishes (called doctor fish) nibble on the dead skin cells on your feet and they seem really happy to do so. You have swarms of them coming to your feet and sucking the hell out of them. Feels really ticklish at first but after a while, it really feels quite good. Some of these fish are really fed till super big! You can try it at Kenko Wellness at $16.90 for half an hour (if I got the price correct) or you can make your way down to Qianhu for this therapy at a much cheaper price. The most expensive place I have seen is at Underwater World, costing a booming $35.00++ for 20 min of fish spa and 20 min of foot reflexology.

I foresee many more food treats of exotic flavours and different experiences which I can share with you guys in my new job scope. Definitely an interesting prelude to the job I am going to take on soon. :)

People Come and People Go (Part 2)

Well here are pictures of our "Shiok-a-Dang-Dang IMM BBQ Party" which Granny Irene so aptly puts it. It was great having a reunion with some of my closest friends in my life. I guess I should introduce all of you to my other "family" which hold dear to me even though we are no longer in the same organisation anymore. Even though people come and go, memories of them will stay deep in my heart.

    People Come and People Go

Another month has gone past since I last posted. Wonder why I still keep this blog surviving but in any case, I have not forgotten about it and my "loyal" readers. (yeah guys, I know you all only check out this blog whenever the small star beside my contact card blinks in Windows Live Messenger).

People come and people go, how true this statement is. Throughout one's lifetime, many people exit and enter your life, your friends, family etc. I have been in Wavelink for almost a year now and it has been a great experience for me. Wonderful colleagues, nice working environment but not forgetting the stress it comes with. Come June, I will officially move over to the union side (SMOU) as Industrial Relations Officer, starting from the junior level. Yes changes again but I accept it whole-heartedly with many exciting and challenging tasks to look forward to. Many of my close friends in Wavelink are leaving one by one (including me, even though SMOU and Wavelink is under one umbrella). I started my work here in June 2007, right after ORD. Together in my batch were Cherry and Ria, and Cherry has already left the company in pursuit of greener pastures for her. Our workstations have also been shifted drastically where I am no longer at level 4 and have started doing some work in the union in the 2nd floor. I will miss those times in my small cluster with Trong and Arina where we have loads of fun and crude conversations to de-stress during weekdays. They are one of the reasons why I look forward to going to work as well. :)

Karen is also leaving at the end of this month. She is an extremely good listener with a super big heart. I don't think she ever gets angry at anyone although she always say that she's angry at me. Hahaha. Some pictures taken during Cherry's last day:

    CIMG4994 CIMG4997

    CIMG5027

Well it has been great knowing you Cherry, someone to accompany on the long MRT trip back everyday talking about life, her country (China), Singapore, work and the occasional dinner treats. Guess I will be here posting different pictures very soon when everyone starts to take farewell pictures soon. Yeah I guess it's true, people come and go. From my days in Primary School, my beloved Secondary schoolmates, my funloving Poly buddies, my terrific army days, my wonderful Starbucks Family and Wavelink friends. People come and go but it is the good and memories which stay in your heart, and form a different experience of life wherever you go. Have a great long weekend everyone!

    Traffic Lights

You guys know there are pedestrian crossings situated in Singapore where it is not in a cross junction? Well these traffic lights will only change if somebody presses the big buton by the side. When someone presses the button, a red light beside the button will be lit, indicating that someone has pressed the button. Over at my neighbourhood here, they have recently switched the zebra crossing to this kind of pedestrian crossing, even though the distance across is less than 10 metres. I guess this is due to safety reasons as many cars like to park by the side of the road for a short period of time, making it difficult for pedestrians to see oncoming traffic and for motorists to see pedestrians crossing the road.

For many times, I have seen people standing at both ends of the pedestrian crossing, without anyone pressing the button and waiting for either the light to change by itself or when there are no cars and then jaywalk (Feels weird to see people jaywalk at a pedestrian crossing). Anyway, can someone let them know that they have to press the button for the traffic lights to change? Either that or Singaporeans are plain lazy to just walk two steps away from the mouth of the pedestrian crossing. Everyone has a mentality that someone will do it. Ends up the person is usually me. Kind of weird isn't it? Knowing that such a small chore yet everyone does not do it. Does everyone feel that they are too important to do such small things?

I really wonder what is going on in the minds of people nowadays. Especially so when I dread the thought of squeezing into the stupid train in the morning with nobody giving way or moving in, or lying on the poles or reading newspapers spread wide open, restricting the amount of space people has to stand or not giving up seats to the elderly or needy.

Everyone has to do something for a change to effect. If everything maintains its status quo, how an we ever improve? Even a small change for improvement requires effort of some sort instead of just waiting for it to happen. So friends, next time you reach a pedestrian crossing, do that extra effort to press it (if someone else has not done it yet) and make that change which will benefit everyone.

    Boring Boring Boring

Weekends are damn boring.. Used to have activities lined up with friends last time but now, as all my friends are pursuing a degree of some sort, all have different priorities. What I hear everyday is chiong assignment, do projects, exams... chiong assignment, do projects, exams... Before anyone knows it, they have graduated and be facing the cruel working world outside.

What is Singapore doing to all these students man???

    Leaving Again... On a Car

I'm going on a trip again, this time not by plane but by car. My company co-organised a trip with NTUC U Drive and we are driving up tomorrow. It's a 4 day 3 night journey up to Penang, Kedah (Bukit Kayu Hitam)and Ipoh. Somehow Malaysia decided to choose tomorrow as an election date and somehow Mas Selamat Kastari escaped from Whitley Detention Centre, making it not a very smooth journey to begin with.

For friends out there who may be worried about me, don't be cos I will be able to take care of myself and I am following a very very experienced tour leader's car so not to worry lar ok!

Be back next Tuesday night... See you!

    Acupuncture

Ok I know I said I will update pictures but it has been almost 2 months and no updates from me. Anyway, I declare that I am too lazy to upload the photos here and document whatever happened on the trip, not that a lot of you may be interested to know but if you are keen in seeing the pictures, let me know and we will meet up. I will show them to you (please note that you will have to bring your own laptop :P)

Went for acupuncture yesterday evening as I could not really walk properly. My right foot has been hurting on and off for the past year, usually after a long period of walking or standing. It got so bad on Friday that I was limping every step I took. So went to try this acupuncturist at my neighbourhood here. It was a new experience as I had not done acupuncture before. Three needles was poked into "strategic" nerves found on my right foot and a heating element was placed above my foot to allow maximum effectiveness I guess. The needles was placed there for half an hour where I just lay there, seprated from the other two partitions with a curtain. I was in the centre partition and there were two other ladies in the other partitions. The lady on my right was doing this treatment where they burn a piece of paper in a glass bottle and stick it on your body. How did I know? Cos after some time I heard the sinseh pluck out the bottles from her body... "POK! POK! POK!" With every "pok" she was groaning in pain. Damn... it was a rather hilarious moment. Haha...

After the treatment I was told that the foot pain was caused by uneven usage of strength in both feet and was recommended to go back for another 3 treatments. When I paid outside, the cashier told me it cost $56 bucks. What the hell. 3 needles cost so much. I do not really think I am going back there for another follow-up treatment again. Did the acupuncture work? I do not really know. I will only find out in the long run if the pain keeps coming back.

SUNBURNT Again! Damn. Basketball session was real shiok, though it was hot as hell. Another busy week ahead, barely surviving, in terms of physical, mental and... whatever...

    Wonderful Snowy Retreat!

I am back from Shanghai! It was a wonderful, wondeful trip. As many of you may now know, the weather in China is very bad now. Snowing every day but it was beautiful to tourists like me. It is extremely rare to see snow in Shanghai but it was snowing like mad when we were there. Snow in a city area is simply superb. I will upload more pictures once I got all the photographs organised. Right now, maybe you guys can make do with a group picture from Suzhou :)

    Leaving on a Jet Plane

I'm leaving, on a jet plane, be back home again on Tuesday...

Yeah I'm going away on a trip. It's a company staff retreat and I am going to Shanghai. Check in time is 11pm and here I am blogging before I leave. Heard that Shanghai is now from 0 to 5 degrees. First time I going to some place so cold, and I will not be able to survive the chill without Irene and Zhenpan's luggage and winter wear, and beautiful memories with Chang Hong's Canon Digital Ixus :)

My last time on a plane was in 1999, when I followed CSS choir to Hawaii for performance. I am sure that this trip will be a good one as well. Will blog about the trip when I am back (not immediately though). Btw, Happy Birthday to Werner, Jialin and Wilson! Till then, take care dudes!

Always on the Alert to Ace, Achieve and Aspire

It was a great gathering! With so almost half of the 2A class of CSS 1998 who turned up at Doc's Green for the gathering. Really brought back good memories of so many years ago! Truly a great start to year 2008.
